Eligibility

  • Be a permanent resident (or a New Zealand citizen holding a Special Category visa)
  • Have lived in Australia on a valid visa for 4 years immediately before applying, including the last 12 months as a permanent resident
  • Not have been absent from Australia for more than 12 months in total in those 4 years, including no more than 90 days in total in the 12 months immediately before applying
  • Be of good character (if 18 or over)
  • Pass the citizenship test — score 75% or more and answer all 5 Australian values questions correctly
  • Intend to live in Australia, or keep a close and continuing link with Australia

When your permanent residence starts

For citizenship purposes, your permanent residence starts on the day your permanent visa was granted if you were in Australia, or the day you first entered Australia on that visa if you were overseas.
